South American Animals
South America is the forth largest continents; South America has nearly all climates and landscapes. South America has the largest Rainforest and it is near the Amazon River; because of this South America has many different types of animals. I will list a few of them with some information.
Alpaca: The close relative of the Alpaca is the Camels and Llamas; however they are mostly confused with the Llamas- However they are much smaller.. The Alpacas may be a descendant of the wild Guanaca. These are hearing animals that live in the Western Andes Mountains, Peruvian. They live in Shrubs and grasslands in High altitudes of 12,800 to 15,000 feet. They are semi- domesticated mammals. Young alpaca's are usually called Crias. They have a long life span of 15-20 years. Alpacas make many sounds which include; Humming, Whining, Grumbling, Clucking(Most Common), and many other sounds that they use to communicate between each other. Like the Llama, the Alpaca also does Spit; However when they do spit this is a sign of Dominance, fear, or Warning that there is an intruder. The alpacas do have a large number of Predators which include Pumas and other Large Carnivores, in South America. If Alpacas are Domesticated; A Predator to them up her would be a Coyote or Wolf.
Coagar: Also know as a Panther, Catamount and Mountain Lions(Like how we have up here); The Scientific name is Felis concolor (Felis mean cat, just how the scientific name for a cat is Called Felis). The Felis Concolor is a very firce cat, it lives in Forests, Rain Forest, Grasslands, and Deserts. The Felis Concolor do not roar and can only purr; As the Felis. Felis Concolors are very athletic and great jumpers, climbers, and swimmers. The Felis Concolor has a life span of about 8 years. They are Sub-Species of the very endangered Puma. Pumas are endangered do to the fact that they are being over hunted by men and Habitat loss. The Felis Concolor has good eye sight and hearing like any felis. They are Carnivores; Solitary Hunters- Hunting during the day and night.
Common Iguana: Also know as the Green Iguana, Conman Lizard, Common Green Lizard, Or Iggys; There are many names for them. Iggys can grow very large in size they can grow 6-9 feet(My Iggy grew around 8 feet and about 40lbs). Iggys live 15-20 years in Captive activity. They are usually weight about 10-15lbs but can exceed 40lbs or more. However due to the fact that they need Heat and if they don't have that heat the could pass away. They are a threatened species due to loss of habitat. Iggys live in rainforests and near river banks. They can be found in Central and South America, some Pacific islands, and the Florida Keys. There colors are Usually from Green to Brown (For Example my Iggy was a very bright green w/ tips of brown on her nose). They like to climb trees and swim. They are most defiantly Herbivores (I tried feeding my iggy some meat and she did not eat it). They can lay 30-40 eggs. There predictors are very large birds, foxes, rats, weasels, some snakes, and people. Their eggs are also eaten by many animals.
